I am interested in sunless tanning at a spa. How does it work?

I called my spa and they said that the tan is applied by hand. I'm pretty modest and that kind of freaked me out. Does that mean they spray it on by hand or that they'll apply a lotion by hand? They also said they'd exfoliate before. What can I expect? I'm too embarrassed to ask the spa personally.
